Something is Terribly Wrong

I read this article today about some people in the Philippines who are “crucifying” themselves in a ritual that is supposed to honor the death of Jesus Christ.

The girl in the picture is only 18 years old, and voluntarily signed up to have nails driven into her hands. The few who participated with her also had their backs whipped with paddles that had broken glass on them. Apparently this area is mainly Catholic and just one of the ways that they show their appreciation for what the Lord has done.

Are you kidding me? Jesus Christ died on the cross to pay for the sins of the world, not to have some 18 year-old lunatic nail herself on the cross while the other crazy village people sit around eating ice cream and drinking beer. This is mockery!

Little girl, please take the INRI sign off of your celebrity pedestal. You are NOT the King of the Jews.

If she wanted to show appreciation for Jesus, then she should do it by living a Godly life of obedience and submission to Him. Mutilating yourself does not please God. In fact doing anything extra, of our own making, is not pleasing to God even with the best of intentions. I think their zeal for the Lord is misguided and they’re in desperate need of understanding and prayer.

I agree! It’s sad what people think they need to do to please God. They don’t realize that His Gift of Salvation is free. He simply wants us to accept it, and live it!

This is, sadly, a perfect example of what believing in man-made traditions over Scripture does. Although the Roman Catholic Church in the Philippines say they don’t condone such practices, neither do they educate the ‘laity’ on wrong it is.

Instead, they said they can’t stop them, and dishes out advice like making sure that those willing to be crucified get tetanus shots and that the nails used to pierce are well-sterilized!

I’m quite surprised the Western hemisphere only learned about this phenomenon in the Philippines recently judging from the reports in the newspapers and how they write it up, when it has been taking place for years.

    Shalom.
