I was listening to an audio sermon from Andrew Womack yesterday and I’ve decided to create a blog series based on his sermon titled “How to Deal With Temptation”.
In the first segment (relative to his teaching), I will be discussing how we can overcome temptation by “preparing our heart”. It is the first thing we must do, if we are going to have victory over the devil. Mr. Womack says, “you can get your heart so fixed on God that you wont do evil.” I agree with him, and I believe it is possible to never sin if our hearts are prepared and we are seeking God at all times. After all, sin occurs when we are not in the Presence of God. It happens when we start chasing after our own desires, and ignoring the convictions that the Holy Spirit has placed upon us.
Think back to a moment when you have been in the Presence of God. You are alone with Him, and you are praising and worshipping Him. Can you really imagine doing something evil in that moment?
We don’t have to sin, we choose to sin.
You might say to me, “only Jesus is perfect, and we are all going to sin.” I would answer as Mr. Womack has answered, “don’t judge me according to your standards.” If you’re convinced that inevitably you are going to slip and fall everyday, then you probably will. You’re heart is not prepared.
So how and when do we prepare our heart? First off, it needs to be done before temptation comes along. Mr. Womack says, “it’s impossible to make a U-turn when you are going 1000 miles per hour.” If you are running that fast after God, when temptation comes, it’s not going to trip you up. Conversely, if you are moving slowly in your walk when temptation comes, it won’t be that hard to turn away from God and go in the other direction.
We can prepare our hearts by spending more time with the Lord. By seeking Him every day and including Him in all that we do. You can also prepare yourself for any temptations by forming a battle plan. This has to be done before the battle! Jesus prepared 30 years before He went into the desert to be tempted.
One problem that has caused Christians to stumble, is that they are dancing a little too close to the line of righteousness and sin. We watch television shows with sexual images in them, and expect those images to be forgotten. We condone lying when it is “absolutely necessary”, and forget that it is an abomination to the Lord. Christians are always seeing how far they can go, and how much they can enjoy the world as those who are of the world do, and then they are shocked when they fall into sin.
Maybe if we start concerning ourselves with how to be righteous, we can actually start being righteous. What a concept?

Amen, I had taught on this at Imrah.
2 Peter 1:13 tells us to “prepare our minds for action”. Without preparation we will fall.
Discipline is closely linked to Holiness. [Hebrew 12:1-12]. I will be sharing with you 4 clear teachings Abba has taught me on this. It’s powerful, and without these four teachings, faith will be incomplete.

i agree. i think a lot of times we will say to ourselves, “well, we’re supposed to sin, so, it’s okay if i sin”.
a good analogy that i once was told about God’s grace…we’re walking on a tight rope at a circus during a show where everyone is watching you. if you fall (sin), the safety net is there to protect you (God), but, it wouldn’t be a very good show for people to see you fall when you’re supposed to make it all the way across.
that last part, i say as an analogy…i know we’re not “performing” for others, but the main point is that we should try not to sin, but if we do fall, God is there with His grace.
good entry, justin.

Often I hear people say we can’t be righteous as if it’s an impossible standard, but scripture tells us to be holy, righteous, and perfect. It doesn’t help that we’re taught that following any rules makes us legalists who deny Christ. But if we have the spirit in us living and working, we do have the ability to live a holy life because the spirit can and does live that way.
I like that “1000 miles an hour” idea!

oops…i just reread my comment…i did not mean “we’re supposed to sin…”, i meant that we know that God’s got our back, so we talk ourselves into saying it’s okay to sin because He’ll forgive us.

So true! I’ve thought about this a lot. One related Scripture that stands out to me is Galatians 5:16 : “Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.”
Like you mentioned, I think of the times when I am so close to God — that is, not just saying I am, but having an actual encounter with Him, where we’re conversing in spirit. During those times and immediately afterwards, sin is so ugly because I see it for how it really is. And I’m experiencing the awesome purity & holiness of God (by His grace, of course). At that time, I refuse to give an inch to sin.
Unfortunately, I don’t always walk in that intensity with God, but I want to. I want to always “walk in the Spirit” and thus not fulfill the lusts of the flesh.

Very well said Bobby. That’s a good analogy, and I agree that it is common for some Christians to think, “well, I can just ask for forgiveness and everything will be fine.” I think this is best addressed by Paul in Romans 6.
Beppo - where ya been? Ha! Ha! That’s a great scripture, and in my opinion a crucial one also. It couldn’t be put any simpler!

I guess I’ve been on a temporary vacation from others’ blogs, though not on purpose. I enjoy your blog, so I’ll be back, just maybe not every day.

beautiful blog and excellent post on temptation
“… sin occurs when we are not in the Presence of God. It happens when we start chasing after our own desires, and ignoring the convictions that the Holy Spirit has placed upon us.”
great thought! I had shared a little while back on temptation as a battle in Perfect Realism. … “When we resist temptation we are pushing back against the Evil One himself.”
peace in Christ,
